Wavelength Winter Festival 2025

Festival

Wavelength celebrates 25 years of musical independence with our Winter Festival 2025. In honour of our silver anniversary, we’re ringing in the new year with three incredible nights of programming at St. Anne’s Parish, which is now the home base for our programming.

Winter Fest 2025 is not just a celebration for us, but for long-time supporters and the Toronto music community who have watched us grow from a weekly Sunday night club-show series in 2000 to the non-profit multi-format platform we are today. 25 is a special birthday for us and we can’t wait to have you join us for this year’s festivities.

Featuring returning Wavelength staples and emerging underground talent, each night on this year’s lineup is stacked from head to toe, bringing together diverse underground music genres, from indie and punk to hip-hop and experimental.

We start things off on night one with an evening themed around hip-hop artist/activist pHoenix Pagliacci’s latest album Dichotomy. In addition to a performance from pHoenix, the rest of the lineup will feature sets by artists who guested on the album, including gothic post-punk drone sisters Bonnie Trash, raucous Afro-punk trio The OBGms, and DJ sets from everyone’s favorite “bedroom rapper”/Wavelength favourite Cadence Weapon. The evening will kick off with a cross-cultural improv collaboration from Gurpreet + Truss.

Friday night’s lineup (night two) will feature two floors of amazing guitar bands across a range of 21st century indie music styles. Upstairs will feature swoony dream-pop band Tallies, Montreal indie folk crooner Alex Nicol, and Toronto’s buzzy, jangly indie pop crew Ducks LTD. Downstairs features music from garage punk outlaws Priors, new wave tinged indie-pop project Essie Watts, and the return of Controller. Controller, a band whose infectious dance-punk sound left a mark on the 2000s. All-vinyl DJ sets from the always amazing SadStab.

And finally on night three, we conclude Winter Fest 2025 with two massive lineups both upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs will have music by Montreal shoegazers Bodywash, Anishnaabe indie-rock duo Ombiigizi, and the incomparable musical genius Owen Pallett. Downstairs will feature ambient songstress Erika Angell, funk, synth-pop superstar Jane Inc. and coming all the way from the UK, enchanting electro-pop artist Mui Zyu. DJ sets from queer dancefloor lovers Precious Jewel.

BAD TO THE BONE & BOOTLEG CREEDENCE

children cooking

BAD TO THE BONE is North America's One and Only tribute to George Thorogood! The band was formed in the summer of 1993 by Gator James and has been going strong ever since. Based out of Oshawa, ON, this band is the only authentic tribute to George Thorogood to date and continues to wow audiences from coast to coast. The band has shared stages with many recording artists over the years and some several times over, EG: April Wine, Kim Mitchell, David Wilcox, Georgia Satellites, Sass Jordan, Goddo, and many others.

BOOTLEG CREEDENCE features four seasoned, well-respected musicians who have been making music in various combinations and styles, for over twenty-five years. It is only fitting that they should come together to form Bootleg Creedence, and pay homage to a group that dominated the charts during the band members’ formative years, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Bootleg Creedence takes its audience on a rockin’ ride down to the bayou. Authentic-sounding, Bootleg Creedence leaves no stone unturned keeping true to the sound of CCR and John Fogerty.

UPCOMING DATES TO REMEMBER:

TUE MAR 4, 2025

PANCAKE DAY!

Shrove Tuesday, colloquially known as Pancake Day, celebrates a day of indulgence before the fasting and abstinence that characterizes Lent. In many cultures, including Canada, this indulgence manifests in the making and eating of pancakes. This happens due to the common practice of using up rich foods like eggs, milk, and sugar before the onset of the Lenten period.

Shrove Tuesday's roots date back to medieval times in Europe, and it came with British settlers to Canada. Its association with pancakes draws from the tradition of using up surplus ingredients before Lent. This observance's significance in Canada is multifaceted. It is a time for religious reflection for many, particularly adherents to the Christian faith. Moreover, it has a cultural significance as it provides an opportunity for culinary traditions to be passed down, and celebrations to be held within communities and families nationwide.

In Canada, various local customs accompany Shrove Tuesday. Some communities host pancake breakfasts or dinners at local schools, community centres, or churches. These events often serve as fundraisers or food drives for charitable organizations. Each year Canadians look forward to indulging in their homemade pancakes, marking the eve before Lent begins, and celebrating a tradition that carries both cultural and religious significance. This observance varies year by year as Shrove Tuesday's date depends on the date of Easter; however, it typically falls between February 3rd and March 9th.

WED MAR 5, 2025

ASH WEDNESDAY!

As the first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday awakens us to Jesus’ entry into the desert preceding his death. Before Easter, however, we must prepare our hearts for his Resurrection.

We begin our season of preparing our hearts for Easter by recognizing our brokenness and need for conversion, a turning of our hearts to God.

RAMADAN

Celebrating Ramadan in Canada involves observing the Islamic holy month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. Muslims in Canada fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from food, drink, and other physical needs. The month is marked by increased worship, prayer (especially the Taraweeh prayers), and giving to charity. Iftar (the meal to break the fast) is often shared with family and friends, and special events may be held at mosques and community centers. Muslims also celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan with prayers, feasts, and festivities.

SAT MAR 8, 2025

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY!

International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8th each year, is a global event recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves as a call to action for gender equality and women's rights. The day is marked by various events, including rallies, discussions, and performances, highlighting women's contributions and advocating for progress in gender equality worldwide. Each year, International Women's Day is centered around a specific theme to raise awareness and drive change.

MARCH BREAK

In Ontario, Canada, School March Break (often referred to as Spring Break) is a scheduled one-week break during the month of March. It is a holiday for elementary and secondary school students, typically taking place in the middle of the month. This break provides students and staff a short respite from schoolwork and classes, and it is a time for families to go on vacation, relax, or engage in leisure activities.

The dates for the March Break vary slightly each year depending on the school board, but it usually falls around the second or third week of March. During this time, many families in Ontario take advantage of the break to travel, enjoy winter or early spring activities, or spend time together.

It’s important to note that some school boards may have different schedules, so it’s always a good idea to check with the local school or district to confirm specific dates.
